About Me

I’m Nanci Murdock, and for as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with money and how it works. Which is understandable because for a long time I didn’t have any.

If you are here, you probably want to learn more about money. How it works, how to make it, how to keep it, how to invest it and how to make sure you own it (as opposed to it owning you).

I have been poor ($20,000 on my VISA, no job, 'how am I going to pay my rent?' poor), and I have been wealthy (not helicopter-pad rich, but enough— and then some kind of wealthy). I can tell you wealthier is easier but not necessarily happier.

Over the past ten years, I’ve had countless friends, family members, and colleagues reach out to me asking what they should do with their recent [fill in the blank].

These women were receiving divorce settlements, estate inheritances, annual bonuses, proceeds from selling a home, and yes, even winning the lottery, and very few of them knew quite what to do with it.

Many of these conversations started with a knock at my door (work or home) and, “Hey Nanci, I don’t mean to bother you, but do you have five minutes?”. And then an hour later, they would have had a crash course in money and investing – and, which always surprised me, a seemingly profound sense of relief.

And I have come to realize that while I was buried in a stock analysis book, studying charts with my pencil and a ruler, or writing 100 affirmations every day for months,
“I now earn over $250,000 a year”, in a spiral, lined 30 pages NBA notebook from the dollar store because it was all I could afford (it worked, and it worked!), they were studying to be Doctors, Real Estate Agents, Professional Speakers, raising children, going back to school, caring for elderly parents, and so it goes.

And, apparently, not everyone dreamt for years about the day Vanguard would come to Canada.

What can you expect?

The primary focus of this blog is going to be teaching women how to invest.

Everything from mutual funds, asset allocation, investment fees, RRSPs, TFSA, risk tolerance—you name it, I’ll cover it.

You can expect 1 – 2 new posts each week and a podcast launching in September 2024!

Stick around, this might even be fun!

Biography

I am the former Head of Marketing for BCA Research, the world’s leading provider of independent investment research. At BCA, I was responsible for designing launching the firm’s early digital strategy, including content marketing, corporate blog, website and new product design.

I began my career in Victoria, B.C. at Scotia McLeod and then Merrill Lynch. I moved to Montreal, QC in 2001, starting at BCA Research in the sales department on Tuesday, September 4, 2001. One week later, on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 the planes hit the World Trade Centre, and it was a long dark period. Enough said.

Later, things got much, much better. I met my husband—children followed.

I left BCA in 2008 to spend some time figuring out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I returned in 2011, initially to design and launch their online content and social strategy; subsequently becoming Head of Marketing in March 2012.

Having accomplished what I set out to do, I left BCA in August of 2014 to take a stab at entrepreneurship.

I am self-taught in WordPress development, design, Social Media, Marketing, and Strategy. We are living in a time when you can truly learn anything online. Which, in turn, means you can teach anything online. Think about that.

I received my Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2001. I have never attended University. For years, that bothered me, and I apologized for it. Recently, I came to be grateful I dodged that bullet.

Married, two kids; Louis (13) and Elliot (11). I want them to be safe, happy and successful (whatever that means to them), but mostly I want them to learn to code.
